Suicide Prevention Resources from Dr. Tony Sheppard
Did you know that the average suicidal crisis often lasts less than 15 minutes?
When you’re in crisis, it can feel like the end of the world, but if you can make it through; it’s better on the other side! The resources on this page can help. They offer help in times of crisis, support, and most of all hope for the future.
Suicide remains a leading cause of death across all age groups. Counseling plays an important role in managing suicidal thoughts and in developing coping skills. Research shows that supportive counseling, safety planning, and medication management are all important components in dealing with suicidal risk.
There are three components to suicidal risk. 1) Suicidal Thoughts-These are relatively common and represent a moderate degree of risk. Typically, people are treated on an outpatient basis to manage suicidal thoughts. 2) Suicidal Plans-This involves planning for how one would attempt suicide. This represents a more serious risk when combined with active suicidal thoughts. 3) Suicidal Intent-This means that the person has decided to act on the thoughts and implement the plan they’ve worked out. When all three components are combined (Suicidal Thoughts, Suicidal Plans, and Suicidal Intent), a suicidal crisis exists. Typically, hospitalization is recommended during these times of crisis.
Ongoing counseling reduces the risk of suicide in all age groups.
Tip: Keep a list of things worth living for. Reading this when you’re feeling suicidal can really help. Think about your pets, family, friends, religious community, favorite activities…
